About Capital Gate

The Capital Gate is a tall building popularly referred to as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi with a height of 165 m (541.34 ft). Also, the Capital Gate has broken many Guinness records worldwide. Furthermore, the tower broke the record of the furthest leaning man-made tower. In fact, it exceeds the second furthest leaning man-made tower by a factor of four. Asides that, the building is just a mere 35 stories, unlike other building in the UAE, like the Burj Khalifa. Finally, the Capital Gate is located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its exact coordinates are 24.418637°N 54.434692°E. M

Overview

Construction of the Capital Gate began in September 2007. The building main structures were finished (topped out) in 2010, but construction finally finished in 2011. The diagrid of the Capital Tower was specially made. It was made in such a way to absorb vibrations caused by wind. Since the building leans a whopping 18 degrees, gravitational forces on the building are immense. To counteract this, vertical post-tensioning in the concrete is used to hold up the building.

Other Facts

Firstly, the main contractor hired for the building project was Al Habtoor Engineering Enterprises. Secondly, Capital Gate leans 18° westwards. Thirdly, the total floor area available in the building is 53,100 m2(572,000 sq ft). Fourthly, RMJM – a British design firm – served as the main architect and structural engineer of the building. Finally, Capital Gate was opened to the general public on 21 December 2011.
